Case Studies | See what our Vet has to say about MMM "This is one of the most rewarding treatments we can offer to our clients- the MMM treatment program for canine myositis patients. Clients from all over the world reach out to us to find a long-term solution for their dogs suffering from myositis. We treat many myositis cases with patients in various disease stages, some of them in severe pain and unable to eat. Steroids provide temporary relief and are the first choice treatment of veterinary surgeons. Our treatment program is an effective alternative to the conventional long-term steroid treatment. It can be used alongside the initial steroid treatment and can achieve complete healing from the disease over time. Read more What is Myositis? Myositis is classed as an auto-immune disease. The own immune system attacks muscle fibres leading to severe inflammation, muscle wastage and the formation of scar tissue. Quite often, the masticatory muscles, the muscles used for chewing, are affected and the patients are unable to open their mouth to eat. It is a very serious condition that needs immediate treatment. What is causing myositis? Anything that has the ability to influence and confuse the immune system can play a role in the disease. This can include vaccines, toxins (food and environmental), viral and bacterial infections. We also strongly believe that commercial dog food plays a role in the development of the disease. Commercial dog food has a lack of nutrients necessary for a healthy and well functioning body. Additionally, substances in commercial dog foods like gluten have the ability to disrupt the absorption process in the intestines leading to local inflammation, triggering an immune response. This is why a raw, fresh food diet is an essential part of our treatment program. Our treatment approach The McDowells Herbal approach is to try and normalise the immune reaction overall. Most importantly, we need to optimise digestion and liver function. Herbs like Chamomile and Dandelion are very useful for this. We also need to normalise and optimise the metabolism and help the elimination of toxins from the body. The herbs in our Conditioning Mix are the ideal combination to achieve this. Other herbs in the mix balance and support the immune system. The Bachflowers in the mix address the emotional side of the disease by improving the energy flow, balancing emotions, creating harmony and creating a feeling of safety. Additionally to the Conditioning Mix we work with strong, natural anti-oxidants, the Maritime Pine Bark Extract. Maritime Pine Bark is a very special herb that protects the body from harmful free radicals. This is especially important when inflammation is present in the body. Maritime Pine Bark positively influences many organ systems. It also has a balancing and strengthening effect on the immune system and supports the vascular system. Liquorice and Elecampane Extract provides a natural cortisone type of action along with essential tissue repair. These herbal formulas combined with an excellent raw food diet will help your dog overcome myositis and to live a normal, happy life." Nicki Wiedmann Veterinary Herbalist McDowells Herbal |

The 200ml bottles lasted around 8 or 9 months and we kept using them until they ran out. Sadly about a month later she had a sudden and severe relapse and we decided to go back on a treatment of the drops with only a very low dose of cortisone and hope for the best, as we didn’t want to put her through the deterioration of quality of life from the drugs again. Consulting with McDowells, we were told most dogs have a great recovery going back on the drops and many just require staying on them longterm.
I am very happy and relieved to report that after only a month on the drops and about 2 weeks of low dose cortisone she has made huge improvements! She has gone from almost complete lock jaw and licking soup for dinner to chewing and barking in a matter of days. I am hoping to phase her off the drugs soon and am happy to continue with the drops if that’s what’s necessary, as they had such great success at managing her condition before she went off them. It’s a small price to pay to see my happy girl healthy and smiling again. She’s now almost 16 and has a lot of life and love left in her!
I went to multiple vets here in the States and they all told me he would have to be on prednisone for the rest of his life. My love and I conducted a lot of research and found McDowells.
I was initially nervous but the consultant, Kerrie, provided us with a lot of information. She recommended we try the MMM herbals in addition to one round of the steriod and to change his diet to a raw diet with millet and flaxseed. We wanted to ensure Oliver's health so we bought two rounds of the program.
I accidently bought 4 and the McDowells team fixed my mistake immediately. I appreciate all of the help and information the McDowells team provided, the speed of service (I believe it took under 2 weeks for delivery), and the RESULTS. Oliver is back to his happy-go-lucky self, happy to eat, carrying huge sticks, and not a sore on his body.
Oliver has been off the steriod since June but we have continued to give him the herbs.
Thank you!
In February, my younger whippet Zelda started feeling unwell. The initial symptoms were related to her eyes, but the treatment yielded no results. I noticed that she was having difficulty chewing chicken necks, but I didn't pay much attention to it. In April, after she received a vaccination shot, her face suddenly appeared shrunken and she experienced more obvious difficulties with eating. I immediately took her to the vet, and before this, I had read about a condition called MMM on the internet. My vet, who is in his 60s and heads a clinic, was unfamiliar with this condition and had never encountered a dog with it. He called the vet school to consult with a specialist, as MMM is rare in France. The only treatment option offered to us was Prednisone, initially at a very high dosage. I was informed that this could potentially be a lifelong treatment and that Zelda's shrunken appearance might persist. Once I got home, I searched for alternative treatments and testimonies but didn't find much. That's when I started looking into the Anglo-Saxon world and came across the McDowell website, which turned out to be a blessing. I read the testimonials and decided to reach out. I was amazed by the prompt response and the detailed information provided by Kate. What amazed me, even more, was that despite living in France, they were able to deliver the product to me in less than two weeks.
Zelda has been taking MMM for 45 days now and will continue on a smaller dose of Prednisone for one more month. The improvement has been noticeable. In addition, I give her homemade golden paste, and my dogs are always fed natural, fresh meat and vegetables to which I have added flaxseeds and seaweed. I visited the vet two days ago, and he couldn't believe his eyes. Zelda had lost 4 pounds, which she has now regained, and her muscles have already started showing above her eyes and in the jaw area.
I have attached two pictures - one taken in April and the other from yesterday. In April, she would suffer every time she ate (and she is always hungry!). She appeared sad and depressed. Although her muscles haven't fully recovered yet, she can now chew and even help us with some lumberjack work in the garden by carrying logs in her mouth. I will send more photos in the coming months, and in the meantime, I plan to reorder the MMM program.
