Description / Wormwood
Botanical name: Artemisia absinthium
As a medicinal herb, wormwood is highly valued in both Eastern and Western civilizations. The Romans are said to have grown it along the side of the road and placed sprigs in their footwear to prevent sore feet during lengthy trips. Wormwood is used in vermouth, a bitter aperitif, and includes thujone, which is responsible for the terrible reputation of the drink absinthe.
As its name implies, wormwood is also used to expel parasitic worms.
Wormwood is mostly used as a digestive tonic, treating heartburn and flatulence along with indigestion, gastric pain, and lack of appetite. Additionally, by inducing gallbladder and liver secretions, it is claimed to be beneficial for liver insufficiency.
