Botanical name: Salix alba
It has been known for at least two millennia that willow bark can lower fever and ease discomfort. One of the earliest plants to be studied scientifically was salicin, which was isolated and given the name "salicin" in the middle of the 1800s. Salicin was the forerunner of aspirin.
It is primarily given in modern herbalism for inflammatory ailments, such as arthritis and rheumatism; it also helps regulate fevers and eases general pain, headaches, and neuralgia.
The body uses salicin to convert it into salicylic acid, another chemical component. Like acetylsalicylic acid, salicylic acid relieves pain and discomfort by reducing the production of some prostaglandins in your nerves, which are hormone-like molecules that regulate your immune system and fight joint inflammation. Willow bark has demonstrated anti-inflammatory properties in multiple lab-based investigations.
