Description / Slippery Elm Powder
Botanical name: Ulmus rubra
Nutritious and mucilaginous, slippery elm is a popular herbal remedy for calming and lubricating tissues in the digestive system.
Native Americans utilised slippery elm extensively as a medicine. The Iroquois utilised the tree's bark, scraped off, along with other plants, to cure swollen, diseased glands. An eye wash for irritated eyes was produced from the inner bark. The Menomini consumed the inner bark as a physic after using it in a tea.
Slippery elm was also utilised by Native Americans to make medicinal salves for burns, boils, ulcers, and inflammation of the skin. Additionally, it was taken orally to treat stomach issues, diarrhoea, sore throats, and coughs.
Its therapeutic effects seem to be attributed to saliva and mucus production, which may soothe dry or sore throats and cover inflamed or ulcerated stomach or oesophageal mucosa.
