Botanical name: Harpagophytum procumbens
The native Khoisan people of the Kalahari Desert have been gathering and using the Devil's claw for thousands of years to treat a variety of illnesses and ailments, including syphilis, indigestion, menstrual issues, bitter tonic, and inflammation febrifuge. They have also used it for childbirth and as a purgative.
It is helpful in relieving pain associated with a variety of joint and muscle issues due to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory qualities. Devil's claw's bitter action tones and stimulates the digestive tract. Devil's claw is used as an anti-arthritic medicine because of its stimulating impact on the stomach and gall bladder, which is thought to be related to poor digestion and absorption of food in most arthritic disorders.
Additionally beneficial bioflavonoids and phytosterols—plant-based antioxidants with antispasmodic qualities—can be found in devil's claw.
